The day could not have dawned better on showday. The cloud cover and gentle breeze of the morning eventually gave way to 28 degrees plus in the afternoon. We had lots of entries on the day but the show still began at 9am promptly. Our six judges and stewards walked onto a beautiful surface which we have come to expect from the groundsman and caretaker at the Foxton racecourse. The 92 competitors were reasonably spread throughout the rings and in many sections there was tough competition. At the conclusion of the morning classes, 4 sidesaddle lady riders came into the ring and we hope this section will grow in time. The major awards of the day were held in the afternoon and a large crowd waited for the presentations. The day concluded with cold drinks all round and a promise to be back in one years time.

On the Saturday night when we were setting up, both Ridley and I were suprised when a woman rode her quad over to us to ask if we would like a hand. Most of the time we say “No, we will be fine”, but this time I thought, gosh we really could do with some help! She stayed with us for ages setting up rings, adding flowers, sorting judges gifts, arranging the secretaries table and putting out the trophies. How fitting it was the next day when the same woman won the sportsmanship trophy! So thank you Nichole from Ridley and me, you made our day with your kindness.

To Jesse who I only met a few days earlier and suggested that he might like to come to the show and take photographs. He took some beautiful photos and they are available to view on his website. www.jessewillson.net In years gone by we have always nominated an official photographer to the show and this year decided to welcome all photographers and Jesse was the only one who came and got involved. Please support his desire to become a professional photographer.

To the lovely young competitors who came and sought out the judges to thank them personally.

When one of our judges collapsed a team of people sprang into action. Carol Kupa RN, Claire Kupa and Wendy Osman, both first aiders cared for Anita and made her comfortable while we all waited for the ambulance. It goes to show the value of having trained as a first aider and anyone interested in this can contact the Red Cross for information.

Our thanks go to the Horowhenua Dressage group for sharing the weekend with us and holding their show on the Saturday. We were happy to sponsor their event and are thrilled that many showies had a go at dressage.

To Wendy the secretary who kept up with all of the late entries so we could start at 9am on the dot. She also kept a spreadsheet of all results so the teams event could be run so efficiently. The catering always falls to Beth Evenson who ‘over caters’ terribly so we have loads to eat after the show.

Judith Buckeridge and Jan Old who were so accommodating in their rings with our ‘judge for a day’ candidates. They freely gave of their knowledge and have inspired at least 2 people to try judging.

I had lots of fun scurrying from ring to ring and sitting in my little sweatbox, so to cool down after the show we dragged the sound caravan and all, to Himitangi beach for a swim. It was bliss and at that moment, thoughts of how to improve the show were already being formulated.

The Bruce Charles Clarke Memorial Teams Event

This event was made even more special in 2011 by the generous donation of $100.00 prize money for each member of the winning team. The Manawatu Saddle Up adult riding club gave us this wonderful donation to reward the most successful team and to honour the teamwork between riders.

It is amazing how much you can accomplish when it doesn’t matter who gets the credit.

This year we had 7 teams vying for points and the kudos of winning the teams championship. The winning team was Team Awesome who hold the silver salver for the next year and take home the prize money, victory sashes and the glory. We would like to thank Anita Clarke and Trophy Specialists for the silver salver, Stirling Sports for the medals and Saddle Up for the prize money that made this competition so special.

The Muppets were a close second and only 8 points behind. Team Tahi, Rua, Toru was third. The 3 young girls of Team Super Ponies were in 4th position. Fifth place was awarded to Team Norfolk. The 21 riders who entered should be proud of their efforts and we look forward to their participation in 2012.

The Bob Linton Memorial Champion Rider of the Show

This trophy has been won by some top riders and this year was no exception. Amanda McCutcheon was on top form when she scored the highest marks in this hotly contested class. There is a lovely silver rosebowl donated by Megan Hawkins (nee Linton) in memory of her father, Bob Linton and the yellow rosebush for the winner to plant as a permanent token from the event. Bob’s favourite flowers were yellow roses and it is only fitting that the sash and ribbon that holds the medal and indeed the rosebush are in his favourite colour.

The Alana Clapperton Champion Junior rider of the Show

We were thrilled to once again have Alana Clapperton to present the sashes to the winners of this class. Alana’s favourite colour is red and a beautiful red rose bush is given to the winner of the class as a permanent reminder of their win in this prestigious class. All of the children who had qualified by winning their rider classes in the junior pleasure, lead rein and first ridden were eligible for this award. The silver rosebowl donated by Kim Clapperton and family and the Alana Clapperton medal and red rosebush and sash were won by Emma Dickons.

MSC 2011 Sportsmanship Award

The Quality Presentations sash and the Steff Coldstream Memorial trophy were awarded to: Nichole McGee. Nichole was selected the winner by our judges for her helpful attitude and sportsmanlike behaviour. She was gracious and polite and the judge in her ring commented that it was a delight to have someone so full of genuine warmth for those around her as well as for her horse. The sportsmanship award is only given to the most excellent of competitors and we know Nichole will be proud to treasure this beautiful trophy for the next year. We would like to thank The Lone Ryders Stunt Team and Katrina and Lequita Frost for the donation of the stunning trophy and Jane and Alan Dear of Quality Presentations who always provide the most beautiful sash for the winner. MSC 2011 Equine Inspiration Award

The Equine Inspiration award is a written competition that required a story of 5oo words or less describing why the horse in question deserves the title of “Equine Inspiration”

The website has given its name to the section entitled “Equine Inspiration” and the event was entered by telling us in 500 words or less why your horse is an equine inspiration. The winner received an equine inspiration lesson donated by Cath Garden valued at $75.00 and a $50.00 Horsewyse voucher plus special rosette and a beautiful Trophy donated by Trophy Specialists and Engraving ltd and Cath Garden.

We would like to thank Cath Garden our judge for the event and sponsor of the class for the beautiful trophy which was co-sponsored by Martin and the team from Trophy Specialists. Martin was instrumental in the repair of 2 damaged trophies on the Friday afternoon before the show. Such is their competancy, that they were able to repair one and rebuild another in record time! Trophy Specialists provide trophies and engraving for the show and we are now delighted that they have given such a lovely trophy for annual competition.

Pictured is the Equine Inspiration class trophy and we are sure that Zoe Herzog ,the inaugural winner has it in pride of place.

We have taken some excerpts from the winners stories for you to enjoy and reflect on. Some are funny, some are sad but all show the tremendous bond between horse and rider. There is a famous quote by Churchill that sums it up rather well.
